SUMMARY:WRITING WORKSHOP: Living Queer History (for LGBTQIA+ Writers)
DESCRIPTION:We who are LGBTQIA+ are living through times of remarkable history. We are people who know what it was like to be queer before Stonewall\, the necessity of the closet just to survive. We are the people who started the Stonewall riot and the movement to live outside of the closet. And then AIDS happened. We are the people who were lost in those years\, and the people who live with that loss still. We are the people who continued the work\, fighting for gay marriage\, dealing with yet another pandemic\, the struggles of our trans community and for gender freedom. And we are the people fighting for social justice right now. We will use writing to gather our collective memories and place ourselves in the continuum of this ever evolving history.\nThis will be a space for multiple age groups to share their stories with each other and hold conversations across the generations. Such space in our culture is too rare.\nThis workshop is part of a series devoted to diverse writers. Although aimed for the queer community\, LGBTQIA+ allies are welcome. Our allies have stories of loss during the AIDS years and histories of working for our liberation.

SUMMARY:WRITING WORKSHOP: Writing Mindfulness
DESCRIPTION:Someone once said that another word for Love is Presence. What does it look like to be fully present to both loved ones and strangers\, and to ourselves? Can we give this attention to our writing\, and use writing itself to better understand being awake to our lives? We have many claims to our attention today\, perhaps most by our devices and other technologies. Here we will stop and create space for the undivided attention of our presence. Instead of giving it away thoughtlessly\, we will bring it back and hold it in the cup of our present moment breath. And in such a mindful space\, write.\nStudents can expect to explore principles of mindfulness and try them out. Using guided meditations and opportunities for writing we will give that other word for love to ourselves\, our world\, and everything the present moment holds for us. This workshop will include readings and discussion\, and opportunities for students to share what they write with fellow participants. All writing skill levels are welcome\, and you do not need experience with meditation. Students will come away from this workshop with new work begun\, and tools to use for more mindful living and writing.\nIn this class\, students will:\n-explore and understand what mindfulness is and the importance of presence\n-create a space in the workshop for mindful attention\n-use writing to better understand mindfulness and make our writing more awake\n-through short readings\, group discussions\, and writing prompts\, students will aim to get closer to a renewed sense of permission and self-trust and creative flow\n-start new work that students can continue after the workshop
